Video: Century Foam Fire in Elkhart, Indiana
by CpU on Jan.20, 2011, under Michiana News, News
An unfortunate event happened today in Elkhart when a manufacturer of foam products caught fire just after noon. Large billows of smoke poured out from the building as the fire quickly spread shooting flames through the roof. Century Foam provides foam products for the RV industry in Elkhart. The Century Foam fire took all the fire response units in the area to put out the foam fueled flames.

Rip-Off Report: BW Service Experts–Michiana
by CpU on Nov.05, 2010, under Business, Michiana, News
If you are looking to get your furnace fixed this winter, try to avoid BW Service Experts for your next heating and cooling system repair in Mishawaka, Elkhart, or South Bend.
Why? Because they overcharge for parts and labor. They do not calculate your service charge based on the amount of time spent, parts costs (plus a little profit of course). Instead they have a set price for the part and install. What to expect if you have to change the ignition board on your furnace.
Expect a quote of $475 for the part and labor. This does not include the initial fee for them to come look at your furnace.
Lets break down this quote because the technician will most likely not tell you how much you are paying for parts, and how much you are paying for labor. Don’t forget tax (but who knows what that taxable amount is unless you drill the tech for lack of information.)
A typical ignition board costs roughly $100-200 give or take. Mine particularly was $109.00.
So breaking down the costs directly:
| Service/Diagnostics Fee: | $100 |
| Replacement Part Cost: | $120 (Shipping, Tax) |
| Labor: | $355 |
| Total: | $575 |
Now how hard is this part to replace? Not hard – actually it took an 8-minute video on HVAC for Beginners to replace a much similar board.
So to sum things up, for roughly 60 minutes of work, they earn $355 plus the $100 diagnostics fee (Or we call that labor). Rip-Off Report Confirmed – and if you are looking to have work done on your next heating and cooling equipment, I suggest you find a local company that isn’t controlled by CORPORATE fingers.
The one thing this company did right was walk away from the diagnostics fee. Offered with out my request after I broke down the numbers over the phone with the manager that could not be found that evening. I did not have any work done and excused the tech from my house. He was happy to leave while also leaving my door open to the cold weather. Standing two feet from my back door (as it was wide open) waiting for his fee while I spend 20 minutes trying to get ahold of someone who can explain this poor service and untrustworthy business practices.
When the technician makes sighs and statement like, “I hope you have a credit card, last time I did one it was expensive.” Be worried and do your homework. There are plenty of hardworking American Companies who deserve your money and BW Heating and Air-conditioning in Mishawaka, South Bend, and Elkhart is NOT one of them.
The location I experienced this is in the Mishawaka, Elkhart, South Bend Area.

SOUTH BEND — The envelopes from your bank and employer may be starting to pile up at home. It is the time of year people are starting to do their taxes. The United Way is helping local residents keep pennies in their pocket, by offering free tax preparation for those in need. |
Trained tax advisers, including some former accountants, will be at many sites throughout South Bend, Elkhart, and Plymouth in the next couple of months. The volunteers will prepare and file taxes for free, for people who need the help most.
Tiffany Reddick is one of the tax assistance volunteers. Last year, she was one of the people who benefited from the free service.
“They were looking to help me get as much money as possible. You know, they weren’t just rushing through everything. They were taking their time, asking me questions, making sure I was getting everything I could get,” Reddick said.
“The benefit we’re looking to help people with is to keep their money in their pocket,” said Dawn Chapla of the United Way of St. Joseph County. “That’s kind of a plain way to say it.”
This year, the United Way ramped up its volunteer income tax assistance program because of a growing need. More than 75 volunteers, like Reddick, will file refunds for up to 2000 families in this area.
“There are a lot of people who don’t have work or whose incomes are diminished for a number of reasons ‒ or are afraid they will be one of those who won’t have incomes they’ve been used to ‒ so saving every penny is important,” said Kay Ball of the United Way of St. Joseph County.
Reddick said she not only saved money on the preparation, she also got a bigger return than she ever had before.
The tax preparers will make sure every person who uses the free service receives the earned income tax credit if they qualify. The government credit gives low-income workers a portion of their paid taxes back. It can give those families a couple extra thousand dollars to help pay their bills.
To benefit from the tax assistance program, call 211 to set up an appointment. There are 9 sites throughout St. Joseph, Marshall, and Elkhart counties. They will let you know what items you need to bring with you.

So what’s new with Mega Play in Mishawaka, Indiana (2010)
by CpU on Jan.30, 2010, under Michiana
| If you haven’t been to Mega Play in a while you might notice that things are a bit different now. The layout has stayed pretty much the same but with more games, and a different way to play! Meaning no more tokens…
They could fix their sign though. |
|
| Mega Play now has rechargeable pay cards. No more handing out a hundred tokens anymore and worrying about what runny nosed kid had his fun-filled finger tips all over your tokens before you got to them.
They have discounts for the more credits you buy on the card. For $20 you receive 110 credits, which turns out to be 5.5 credits a dollar. If you pay in the small amounts it ranges from 4-5 credits per dollar amount. |
|
| The games range from 2 credits to 4 credits typically. With easy swipe access, you don’t have to worry about the machine taking your coins either. This is just one of the lining walls of the place with racing games. | |
| They have 2 DDR Machines, a whole section of first person shooters, old style games, and of course a section of all pinball… The quality of the games range based on how much credits they cost. The majority of the games are pretty decent, but some are very old school.
Looking to play some virtual baseball? You can get in the batters cage and swing a few and see how well you do. This of course is nothing new from before, so it does look like it has been around a bit. |
|
| Now where to stick those youngster that want to run around and do whatever they can see…
They have a 1 door little guy’s area. This area is limited to certain sized kids and cost $3.50 for the day. They get a wrist band to go in and out freely. Complete with a ball pin, tubes, and tot toys. |
|
| They also have the blow up bouncing room for the kids to jump and play in. Caution though – this could be dangerous. When I was younger I was jumping in something similar and I ended up smacking my knee into my jaw and biting a good part of my tongue off. So always use caution with your kids…! | |
| Oh and the old favorite… Gladiators! Take down the opposing force with your gladiator stick. It’s been around since I could remember! They supply you head pads for safety and is monitored by a staff member to insure no problems occur. |
We only spent about $30 dollars, and have about 60 credits left over. Was fun for the kids, and took up about 4 hours of our time… Not too bad Mega Play.

12 Employees didn’t make it to work today because at 5:00 AM this morning their work was burning down. This is unfortunate to hear, and I hope things go well for all of those employees and families in tough times like these.
