Is it better to ignore their existence to the public? Doesn’t that give us the false sense of protection?

United Way provides free tax preparation – WSBT (South Bend – Michiana)

SOUTH BEND — The envelopes from your bank and employer may be starting to pile up at home. It is the time of year people are starting to do their taxes. The United Way is helping local residents keep pennies in their pocket, by offering free tax preparation for those in need.

Trained tax advisers, including some former accountants, will be at many sites throughout South Bend, Elkhart, and Plymouth in the next couple of months. The volunteers will prepare and file taxes for free, for people who need the help most.

Tiffany Reddick is one of the tax assistance volunteers. Last year, she was one of the people who benefited from the free service.

“They were looking to help me get as much money as possible. You know, they weren’t just rushing through everything. They were taking their time, asking me questions, making sure I was getting everything I could get,” Reddick said.

“The benefit we’re looking to help people with is to keep their money in their pocket,” said Dawn Chapla of the United Way of St. Joseph County. “That’s kind of a plain way to say it.”

This year, the United Way ramped up its volunteer income tax assistance program because of a growing need. More than 75 volunteers, like Reddick, will file refunds for up to 2000 families in this area.

“There are a lot of people who don’t have work or whose incomes are diminished for a number of reasons ‒ or are afraid they will be one of those who won’t have incomes they’ve been used to ‒ so saving every penny is important,” said Kay Ball of the United Way of St. Joseph County.

Reddick said she not only saved money on the preparation, she also got a bigger return than she ever had before.

The tax preparers will make sure every person who uses the free service receives the earned income tax credit if they qualify. The government credit gives low-income workers a portion of their paid taxes back. It can give those families a couple extra thousand dollars to help pay their bills.

To benefit from the tax assistance program, call 211 to set up an appointment. There are 9 sites throughout St. Joseph, Marshall, and Elkhart counties. They will let you know what items you need to bring with you.

13- and 12-Year Old Charged With Sexting Nude Photos

by CpU on Feb.01, 2010, under Guest Post

    By BJ Lutz

A 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy from Valparaiso have been charged with possession of child pornography and child exploitation after it was discovered they were using their cell phones to exchange nude pictures of themselves with each other.

The “sexting” case is being dealt with in Indiana’s juvenile court system.  In adult court, they could have faced 11 years in prison and been forced to register as sex offenders.

The images were discovered last week when the girl’s phone sounded during class and the teacher confiscated it.

An investigation revealed the boy sent the girl an explicit photo of himself Jan. 17 and asked her to use her cellular phone to send back a similar picture of herself, which she did, police said. Police also learned the girl showed the picture of the boy to a seventh-grade friend.

Porter County Deputy Prosecutory Cheryl Polark told the Northwest Indiana Times that young people don’t understand the ramifications of texting nude pictures or posting certain material on social networking sites like Facebook. She said a nude picture could end up being shared with half the school and could get in the hands of people who seek out child pornography.

A recent study from the Pew Research Center reported that 15 percent of teens ages 12-17 say they’ve received on their cell phones sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images of someone they know.

Indiana’s House and Senate are both considering bills to separate “sexting” from child pornography laws.

Sen. Jim Merritt’s (R-Indianapolis) bill would make sexting a juvenile offense instead of placing it in adult court. It would also require parents to attend counseling sessions with their children.
